Appointment of a cobbler's son as a section
officer in the secretariat.
It is less than a
decade ago that the Public Service Commission conducted examinations for the
appointment of Section Officers in the Muzaffarabad Secretariat in Azad Kashmir.
A large number of people from all over Kashmir appeared in the examination to
fill this post. After passing the exams then next step was the interviews in
which the presence of all the members of the Public Service Commission was
required as per the stipulated rules.
The interview
date was announced and at the appointed time all the members of the Public
Service Commission were in their seats. So many candidates who had strong
family and political background had high hopes of getting selected. The first
candidate called for interview had secured first position in the written test
but had no hope of selection as he had no recommendation.
Contrary to the
norm a respected member of the Public Service Commission requested the rest of
his colleagues to allow me to open the questions, which was unanimously
accepted.
The first
question that was asked to this candidate was what does your father do and the
simple answer was that my father is a cobbler.
The second
question is that you should describe an unforgettable incident in your life.
Answer it in a little detail. There was an inter-college elocution competition
in our college in which candidates from different colleges were waiting to
showcase their elocution skills.
As the speeches
went on some of my friends even sent my name as a joke, and when called, I was
brought on stage with my flimsy shoes. Which had been repaired several times
and were unusable that day. I reached the stage barefoot hiding my bare feet
behind the dais and started speaking.
At the end of the
speeches the result announcement and prize distribution ceremony was also held
there, which was even more difficult than the first stage.
I was declared
the winner of the competition by the honorable judges and I was thinking of
ways to escape to hide my poverty. As I tried to slip away my friends caught me
and I went barefoot to get my prize. I was on my way to the stage and there
were tears of happiness and sadness in my eyes at the same time. The sadness
was that today my poverty was revealed and the happiness was that Allah
Almighty has given poverty on the one hand. On the other hand, he is also
blessed with these powers of heart and mind.
This answer shook
all the members and brought uncontrollable tears from everyone's eyes. Usually
during the Public Service Commission interview, the selection of any aspirant
is not announced but to interview this extraordinary talented young man. The
member took two promises from him and announced his appointment
Hula promise that
as you have been appointed today on merit without recommendation, you will also
ensure adherence to merit throughout your service.
Second they will
not smoke inside their office.
I will served to
nation as a servant.
My objective I will
stable this department and all people feel is good.
I will support
poor people for growing up future.
