The unfolding incidents in our universities are difficult to put into words as human beings. These distressing events have left us deeply saddened and desensitized. Investigation Report of Harassments report
Admissions are being sold for exorbitant amounts, leading young students towards drug addiction. Girls are facing indecent treatment, and it seems that our education system's protection is limited to divine intervention.
The existence of over 5500 explicit videos and cases of methamphetamine seizures among female students have caused a major scandal. The thought of parents receiving such news is deeply troubling, and it raises questions about the safety of sending sisters and daughters to such institutions.
The recent incident involving the Chief Security Officer of Islamia University Bahawalpur being caught in an intoxicated state, along with similar charges against two other employees, has further tarnished the reputation of this esteemed institution. Islamia University Bahawalpur holds a significant place among the country's oldest educational establishments, originally known as Jamia Abbasia in 1925 before being renamed in 1975. Additionally, it operates sub-campuses in Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalnagar, and Layyah, catering to around 65,000 students in various departments.
The increasing incidents of sexual harassment in universities can be attributed to the excessive power given to professors, who can significantly impact a student's academic fate. As someone with extensive experience working with educational NGOs and colleges, I can attest that a small favor or disfavor from a professor can determine a student's success or failure.
Unfortunately, this sometimes leads students to resort to unfair means in response to lenient or harsh grading.
Recent incidents at Bahawalpur University, along with previous scandals at Rahim Yar Khan University, have been handled with silence. Until we put an end to this cycle of professors controlling students' destinies through numbers, students' lives will continue to suffer. The role of a Vice-Chancellor needs to be reevaluated, as some seem to act without any proper process or accountability. While primary school teachers go through rigorous procedures such as tests, interviews, and merit-based hiring, it is disheartening to see less deserving Vice-Chancellors importing candidates from London and America, lacking the necessary competence to teach.
The absence of a proper system in universities, with personal connections influencing decisions, must be halted immediately. We require unrestricted and stringent actions to address the current situation in our universities.
